Overview

A couple settles into married life in one of California's nicer suburbs and starts receiving emails from someone calling themselves LilithIsTruth. The messages are threatening and get progressively worse, and every arrow points at Michelle, the husband's ex-girlfriend.

She is arrested. The story lands in local papers exactly the way everyone expected. Jealous ex-girlfriend, obsessive behaviour, a man and his new wife as the obvious victims. The case looks wrapped up before it really gets started.

It isn't. The investigation goes deeper and the clean version begins to fall apart. Digital evidence surfaces that doesn't fit the original picture. Testimonies contradict each other in ways that are hard to explain away, and the people who seemed like clear victims start trading places with the person who seemed like a clear perpetrator.

Fun Facts

- The documentary highlights the extreme sophistication of modern cyber-framing. The perpetrators went as far as utilizing third-party proxies, encrypted routing, and spoofed email accounts to simulate a violent, outsourced stalking plot. This digital trail was so convincing that it initially led law enforcement to arrest and jail the entirely innocent ex-girlfriend, Michelle Hadley, for nearly 90 days.

- A major talking point of the film is its deep dive into structural confirmation bias. Because one of the orchestrators was a active, sitting U.S. Deputy Marshal, local authorities implicitly trusted the fabricated evidence presented to them. The case serves as a terrifying commentary on how easily police investigations can be manipulated when a badge is weaponized from the inside.
