Backrooms
Overview
Some places shouldn't exist. The Backrooms does anyway.
Instead, they fall through the floor of the real world together. This place hums. It has these flickering fluorescent lights that rot your nerves.
Mary and Clark must navigate this nightmare as a team. This setup changes the dynamic of the survival story. Mary cannot just watch from a distance or play the hero later. She is trapped right alongside her patient. Mary's job adds a unique, painful layer to the terror. She has training to stay calm.
The film avoids cheap scares. It never leans too hard on a physical monster, thank goodness. Distances do not add up. The characters slowly realise that the rules of the real world simply do not apply here. You cannot map your way out of a maze that has no exit.

Fun Facts
- Kane Parsons' original YouTube shorts were not traditional animation — they were live-action found footage with VFX compositing, not digital animation. Kane Parsons and A24 wanted the film adaptation to feel hyper-real. The production team constructed a staggering 30,000 square-foot physical 'Backrooms' set.
- Director Kane Parsons made absolute history with the release of the film. At just 20 years old, he became the youngest filmmaker in history to have a movie open at number one at the North American box office. He shattered the previous record held by Josh Trank, who was 27 when Chronicle debuted in 2011.
