Overview

Mexico, 1970 - Brazil arrives at the World Cup carrying something heavier than ambition. Two trophies already in the cabinet. One more and the Jules Rimet Trophy is theirs to keep permanently. No other nation has done it before, and the expectation of being the first sits on every player in that squad.

All of this unfolds during the harshest phase of Brazil's military dictatorship. The government back home needs this victory. It needs to be clean, beautiful, and undeniable, because a World Cup win is the kind of propaganda that does not need to be manufactured. The pressure on these players is political before it is even sporting.

Fun Facts

- The series is produced by O2 Filmes - the Brazilian production house behind City of God, which earned four Oscar nominations. It is their most ambitious television project to date, filmed across locations in both Brazil and Mexico, with five separate VFX studios handling the stadium recreations and match sequences.

- Brazil '70: The Third Star is arriving just weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off which is itself being held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Netflix's timing is deliberate. The last time a World Cup was held in Mexico was 1970. The series and the tournament are meant to echo each other.
