Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing
Overview
Freefall: A Reckoning for Boeing goes looking for proof of that and comes back mostly empty-handed.
John Barnett, a quality control inspector gave Boeing 32 years of his working life. He noticed that Boeing was conducting routine checks unethically. This was related to oxygen systems, parts and specs, which was a huge red flag. Despite raising concerns on these, there was no respite from Boeing. He passed away in 2024 mysteriously and posthumously; legal proceedings did not do justice in terms of how Boeing was treating him. His story is not an account of trauma but a base for this documentary.
Sam Mohawk, a Boeing Quality Investigator, was not even surprised by the sheer audacity of Boeing involved in such tactics as he is also involved in the same legal proceedings.
He isn't alone either. More employees step forward with the same account: managers under pressure to keep the line moving, safety concerns quietly waved through. Kennedy herself is done with it: she has decided not to board a Max or a Dreamliner anymore which is more than any narration could.
Fun Facts
- Director Rory Kennedy developed a close friendship with former Boeing quality manager John Barnett after featuring his testimony in her 2022 film Downfall: The Case Against Boeing. Following his death in Charleston, South Carolina in March 2024, Kennedy and her co-producer Mark Bailey immediately decided to make Freefall to honor his legacy and continue investigating his safety claims.
- Netflix and Imagine Documentaries officially greenlit and fast-tracked the sequel in July 2024. The decision came immediately in the wake of the January 2024 Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 mid-air door plug blowout.
