Overview

East London pub stages in the mid seventies gave bands about four minutes to make a drunk crowd care. Iron Maiden treated those four minutes like their lives depended on it. Fifty years later, that same intensity is what this documentary goes looking for.

Burning Ambition is not a greatest hits recap dressed up as a film. Director Malcolm Venville went after something harder to find than tour footage. What kept these men going when the industry moved on without them? When chart positions fell and trends moved in directions that had nothing to do with what Iron Maiden were doing, the easier path was obvious. They ignored it.

The film carries something no future Iron Maiden documentary can replicate. Paul Di'Anno, the original vocalist who sang on the band's first two albums, died in October 2024. His final on-camera interview is here. That alone changes the weight of the whole thing.

Fun Facts

- The film features the last interview with original vocalist Paul Di'Anno, providing a poignant look at the band's early days from his perspective.

- The 2026 documentary’s key art was created by Alberto Quirantes, a Spanish illustrator professionally known as Akirant. While he is a frequent collaborator with the band, his most notable recent milestone prior to this project was designing Iron Maiden’s 50th anniversary commemorative coin for the Royal Mint in 2025. Quirantes' signature style continues to define the band's visual identity as they celebrate five decades of heavy metal history.
