Moana's world revolves around the ocean and her island home. Her father, strict but not cruel, wants her to stay and lead Motunui, and she has the practical knowledge to do it. But when the island begins dying, staying becomes its own failure. A thousand years ago Maui stole the heart of Te Fiti, and only finding him can undo the damage. When Moana does, the legends leave out his real bravado, ego, and cracks beneath both. She's never sailed past the reef, but the ocean won't wait. What follows is less a hero's journey than a girl learning who she really is beneath who she was told to be.
