Overview

Vineeth Madhavan grows up in Kuttikkanam with one idea locked in his head. Not a decent debut, not a solid first film, but the greatest horror movie Malayalam cinema has ever produced. His father knows the industry and warns him repeatedly. Vineeth hears it and keeps walking.

The industry meets that kind of certainty the same way it always does. Politics run everything and nobody in the room is pretending otherwise. The gatekeepers have held their positions long enough to know exactly how to make a newcomer feel the weight. To compromise and make a film that fits rather than the one he came to make - that’s the dilemma the protagonist deals with repeatedly.

Mollywood Times is a dark comedy that does not dress up the question. In an industry that rewards playing it safe, what does chasing something great cost?

Fun Facts

- The internet and film circles have widely agreed that Mollywood Times acts as an unofficial, highly cynical semi-autobiography of director Abhinav Sunder Nayak himself. The protagonist, Vineeth Madhavan, mirrors Abhinav’s own painstaking journey, perfectionism, and deep frustration with trying to get an ambitious, genre-defining film made within the strictures of the Mollywood system.

- Acclaimed Bollywood filmmaker Anurag Kashyap publicly lauded the film, calling it a 'filmmaker's dream' and highly praising Abhinav's unique narrative structure. Kashyap has frequently championed new-wave Malayalam cinema, and his vocal support on platforms like Letterboxd gave the film a huge boost in national visibility.
