Overview

AJ arrives in Manhattan with a demanding investment bank job and an apartment in Murray Hill that happens to share a hallway with three men she has no plans to meet. Her roommate, Abby, is surviving an impossible assistant position for a celebrity stylist.

Kel, who lives across the hall, has just quit medical school to act, and everyone in his life has a loud opinion about it. Josh, his roommate, is a journalist who benefits visibly from his father's connections and feels varying degrees of guilt about it. Davis wants to fall in love and makes no effort to conceal it.

AJ's professional life is further complicated when her managing director, Bill, becomes something she is not prepared to think about just yet.

The five of them are working out what they actually want, which turns out to be harder than any of their jobs.

Fun Facts

- Behind the scenes, the recurring cast reads like a treasure trove for sitcom and theater fans. The production managed to secure legendary comedic and dramatic vets including Victor Garber, Greg Germann, Judy Gold, and Broadway star Laura Bell Bundy.

- While classic New York sitcoms like Friends or How I Met Your Mother often featured characters casually hanging out in coffee shops and bars during the workday, Kaling explicitly pitched Not Suitable For Work as the exact opposite. The characters are aggressively corporate, deeply competitive, and profoundly stressed making fun of the real-world reality that most Gen-Z and Millennial transplants in NYC are too busy working 60-hour weeks to actually enjoy the city.
