Annie Jacobson thinks she knows her story. She grows up in New York City with a twin brother, a loving adoptive father, and a past nobody in the house ever examines closely. Then the will arrives.

A grandfather she has never known turns out to be real. So does an island she is not supposed to inherit, and both of them are waiting. Her father goes quiet when she asks questions, which tells her more than his answers ever could. Annie decides to find out for herself.

She makes the journey to a remote island in Canada, carrying questions that have been sitting unanswered her whole life. She expects something. It is not what she finds.

Somewhere between the friction and the adjustment, something unexpected starts happening. What the island hands her instead is something closer to who she actually is.
