The House of the Spirits follows this family across five decades, from the 1920s all the way to the military coup of 1973. Esteban Trueba is the man at the centre of it, driven, domineering, convinced that love and control are roughly the same thing. He is not wrong about everything, but he is wrong about enough.

Confrontation is where the series arrives, finally and inevitably. Everything that has been buried, every secret, every cruelty, every choice made in the name of family or country, comes up at once. The world outside has changed everything, and the house can no longer hold it all in.
